The Provincial Archives maintains a reading room with study tables, a reference library, WiFi Internet access, and personal reference assistance for our researchers.
Effective June 8, 2015, Reading room hours are 8:00 AM to 12:00 P.M. and 1:00 P.M. to 4:00 PM, Monday through Friday.
Please note that the public hours for the Provincial Archives are different than those of the National Shrine of Elizabeth Ann Seton. The Provincial Archives is not open evenings or weekends.

Staff research time is limited to 2 hours. If your question requires more in-depth research, you are encouraged to visit our facility in person.
We share the history of the Daughters of Charity in the United States through an ongoing exhibit program. Exhibit hours for the general public are Wednesdays from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. See the “Exhibits” page on this blog for a schedule of current and upcoming exhibits.
Transportation, parking, and accommodations
Baltimore/Washington International is the closest airport. Please note that Emmitsburg is in a rural area. A personal car is essential, as there is no public transportation that goes to Emmitsburg. We cannot provide transportation for visitors. Directions to Emmitsburg from BWI
To get to Archives from South Seton Avenue, enter the campus at the sign marked “National Shrine of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton”, then follow the red campus signs for “Daughters of Charity Archives”. Free parking is available in the lot directly in front of our main entrance.
Onsite accommodations are not available.

Restaurants, a grocery store, a PNC Bank ATM, and a gas station are located along Silo Hill Road, close to the Sleep Inn. Additional restaurants and a PNC Bank branch are located at the intersection of Main Street and Seton Avenue (the PNC branch does not have an ATM machine). The Emmitsburg campus does not have an ATM machine, nor does the campus have food service for visitors.

We are committed to making our collections, services, and public programs accessible to persons with disabilities. We will be happy to assist you in any way we can.
Registration and visitor badge
Researchers visiting for the first time will register with a staff member. The staff member will go over basic policies, including our reading room rules and rules for photocopying and digital camera use. Staff will work with you to determine the materials you need and page them from our repository. Our collections do not circulate and the repository is not open to the public.
Researchers are required to present some form of photo identification when they register. This can be a drivers license, state-issued ID, passport, or school/university ID. The Provincial Archives is open to all researchers 18 years of age and older.
Lockers for storing coats, suitcases, and other items are located in the lobby opposite the information desk. There is no charge for using the lockers. Lockers should be emptied and locker keys returned at the end of each day.
Restrooms and drinking fountain
Men’s and women’s restrooms (accessible) and a drinking fountain are located near the Archives, at the entrance to the Basilica of the National Shrine of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton. Our staff is happy to direct you. You will be issued a visitor badge which will get you into the Basilica and back to the Provincial Archives. Please note that the visitor badge will not allow you to access other parts of the building.
Reading room hours and availability of collections
Reading Room hours are 8:00 A.M. to 12:00 noon and 1:00 P.M. to 4:00 PM Monday through Friday. Collections will be paged until 3:00 P.M.
We do not have a public access terminal; however, WiFi access is available.
